Hi! I’m Dr. Bethany Turpin!

If I could give my students one takeaway from lessons with me, it's that their voice is enough as it is, beautiful and exciting in its own wonderful way, and that their art and expression is worth sharing.

Hi! I’m Bethany (or Dr. Beth!), and I run this show.

Music has been a huge part of my life. Not only have I attended music school for roughly 1000 years, I’ve also performed, conducted, and taught!

I trained as a classical (aka opera) singer at the Memorial University of Newfoundland during my bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and then studied at the University of Western Ontario for my doctorate. I performed in operas, recitals, orchestral and choral works, and unaccompanied vocal works. I worked with ensembles such as the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra, Arcady Ensemble, Fanshawe Chorus, Little London Opera Company, and Abridged Opera, among others.

I really do believe music is for everyone. The human voice is an amazing creative outlet accessible to nearly everyone! My passion is helping others feel comfortable and confident with their unique voice. Whether you're into opera, musical theatre,  pop, folk, or other genres, I'm here to act as a guide and helper in your exploration of music and singing.

Learning is my thing. In 2022, I received my Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Western Ontario. My interdisciplinary research on voice image (click hear to read it for free!) is about the psychology of being a singer and how singers relate to their own voices. In my dreams, my research helps people better understand their relationship with their own voices and leads to better mental health and wellness for singers.

Growing as a music teacher is important to me. I'm always ravenously consuming new information to enhance my teaching and musicianship. Last year, I became a certified coach for the Neuro-Vocal Method and a certified Music Together® teacher. It's important to me to stay up to date on developments in the field of music and music pedagogy.

In addition to teaching, I'm also available as an adjudicator, clinician, and performer/collaborator. Whether you're looking for a voice teacher or a singer to collaborate with, I hope you'll reach out!

When I'm not working, I am involved in many community music efforts such as the community choir, community band, local musical theatre productions, and a cover band. I am also pursuing a Masters degree in counselling online through Yorkville Univeristy. Someday, I hope to be a therapist for artists.

At the end of the day, I am so lucky to go home to the loves of my life, my cat Julian and dog Penny.
